Melinda Marquez is a founding member of Flamenco Vivo, with Carlota Santana and Roberto Lorca and past recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Choreography Fellowship. She has been on the faculty of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Dance CT, Jacques d'Amboise National Dance Institute and is celebrating 25 yrs as a faculty member of Ballet Hispanico of NY. She is in her fifth year conducting classes, choreographing and spreading the excitement of flamenco in Connecticut. Melinda discovered flamenco on the road to a career in classical ballet. She turned down a contract with the Frankfurt Ballet, Germany, to tour with the flamenco companies of Maria Alba and Jose Molina. As a young flamenco artist she performed at Jacob's Pillow, Carnegie Hall with legendary jazz bassist and composer, Charles Mingus, the Chateau Madrid Nightclub and theaters across the United States. In Spain she toured with the company of Miguel Sandoval and danced at the flamenco tablao, Las Cuevas de Nemesio in Madrid.
Ask about "Kathak Meets Flamenco" Sunday, September 26th from 1-3pm. A 2-hr dance workshop and demonstration with Master Teacher and Performer, Najma Ayashah and flamenco guitarist "Espiritu Gitano." Explore the improvised rhythms, intricate handwork, and passionate roots of Indian Kathak and Spanish Flamenco.
